-The Shasta county All Star jazz Project -

The Straight Ahead Big Band Institute is a non-profit corporation that has been created to carry on the work of promoting and preserving Big Bands, Big Band Jazz and the music of the Big Band Era, through live performance, education and work with youth groups. We are pleased to announce this year the first annual Shasta County All-Star Project, the week of June 16th. It is our hope to bring together the best and brightest young local jazz musicians for a one week series of clinics, rehearsals and lectures to promote jazz music and student leadership.

We will be taking applications from interested student musicians from the eighth grade level to college students from the local area under 21 years of age. From the pool of applicants we hope to assemble two standard big bands of approximately 15-20 members each.

Student applicants must have a record of good citizenship, leadership, desire to learn and strong musicianship. Each must be recommended in writing by a band teacher or instrumental instructor, and must have written permission from parents to participate. Auditions on CD will be required with a $5.00 non-refundable processing fee. After the auditions have been evaluated by our chosen panelists, students will be offered a chance to participate in the week’s activities. There will then be a $100 tuition required

The Shasta County All- Star Project will provide the participating musicians with learning opportunities in music theory, music management, improvisation, with sectional and full band rehearsals, and performances by clinicians as well as the students. We anticipate this being another part of the fine music experience available right here in Shasta County and hope you will join us in making it happen.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail redfisch@clearwire.net     or call Steve at 221-3398.

To participate in the Project, each applicant must provide an audition CD with samples of their playing - a ballad, an up-tempo selection, and an ad lib selection. Each segment should be no more than two minutes.  Each CD should be labeled only with a six digit code  of your choice that will be referenced on the application form for identification later. Audition CDs will be judged by somebody who knows your instrument.
